Here's the gosh darn truth - scheduling a family photography session is a big investment of your time and hard earned money. That's why I am so incredibly grateful for and honoured by each client that hires me to capture beautiful images of their family. That's also why I want to make sure every family gets the absolute most out of their session. So today I'm going to share with you the absolute #1 way to make the best of your family photo session.
Honestly guys, you're probably going to think it's way too obvious once I tell you what it is! So to get a little more out of this post, I'll share a handful of tips that I've come up with over the years that make family photo sessions go super smooth and clients who not only end up with stunning images but also good memories of our time together!
Indoor vs. Outdoor
We often associate a family photo session with a smiling family standing in the middle of a field somewhere basking in golden light (See image above, LOL!) But aside from the aesthetic, sometimes an indoor session could be a much better choice for your family! If you have any kids under the age of 2 years old or you have a child that is extremely shy or can get overwhelmed easily, an indoor session can be a much better way to capture your family's story.
I love shooting sessions in client's homes for a few reasons:
Dress for comfort
You've got a fresh manicure. You take the kids for a new haircut. Maybe you've even got your make-up professionally done. You want the family looking their best for the photos but when it comes to what to wear - comfort should top the list of factors to consider. And this doesn't apply just to your husband and kids! (I'm talkin' to you, Mama!) When picking out what to wear for your photo session, here are some tips:
With that in mind, I often encourage Moms to wear long, flowy dresses or skirts. Not only are these more comfortable for cuddling on a blanket with your kids but they are a nice contrast to the pants or shorts that the boys in your life will likely be donning.
Dresses aren't your thing? Then by all means, don't wear one! They're your photos after all and the last thing I would want is to take photos of you in something you don't actually wear!
Bottom line - if you're uncomfortable, your photos will show it. And if you're comfortable, your photos will show it and you'll enjoy yourself more too!
Which brings me to my last and BEST tip for making the most of your family photo session...
Sit back and have FUN
Didn't I tell you it would be obvious? But seriously, sometimes we can be so focused on getting our kids to behave and listen we forget to relax and enjoy our time with them. That's why before each family session I like to have a quick phone call to tell my client to take the night off! For the duration of our session it's important for parents to take a well-deserved break and let me do what they're paying me to do. I will provide the direction I need and if someone isn't feeling it, we let them have a break. Oftentimes some of the clients' favourite images are the ones that really capture their kids' playful or mischievous spirit! But that won't come through if we're busy telling them what to do and where to look.
So, there you have it folks! The single best way to get the most out of your family photography session is to do less and embrace your family's spirit! Really can't get much better than that!
