Yesterday we played tourist and tried out a Scavenger Hunt from Let's Roam! It was a fun-filled afternoon spent outside, rediscovering downtown Ottawa. Here's a re-cap on how it went, tips and tricks and how you can get in on the adventure!

For the past few years, Chris and I have made an effort to focus on gifting the kids experiences for Christmas and birthdays such as ski trips or tickets to a game or concert (as opposed to adding to the mountain of toys and books that have amassed in our home over the years!) That's how we came to find out about Scavenger Hunts from Let's Roam!
In terms of an activity for the kids, this hit all the marks for us:
Here's how it works
Step 1 - Find a Hunt
To get started, visit the website (www.letsroam.com) to find out if there's a hunt in your own city or one you plan on visiting. Let's Roam boasts having over 350 locations to choose from. Most of these are in North America with some across Great Britain, Europe and Australia.
TIP: Tickets are good for any city where Let's Roam has a hunt so you don't need to have a destination picked out beforehand.
Step 2 - Purchase Tickets
At the time of this post, tickets for a standard hunt cost $12.99 CAD per player. Let's Roam suggests that each player get their own ticket. However, you play using an app that you download on a cell phone. Although you can have more than one player per device, we found it didn't really seem to make much difference.
TIP: Purchase the number of tickets equal to the number of cell phones that will be used. You can always add more tickets later - even purchase them right through the app if you want to.
Let's Roam also offers themed hunts for birthday parties, date nights or bachelor/bachelorette parties which cost more per ticket. And for a deluxe package, they will even customize your hunt with selected start and finish locations and trivia specific to the birthday boy/girl. I think this would make for a super fun birthday or bachelorette party!
You can also gift tickets. Tickets are good for up to 2 years from purchase and since you don't have to specify which city the tickets are for, the recipient can use them in any of the cities where Let's Roam has a hunt available! Once you purchase the ticket, Let's Roam will send you a printable gift certificate at no extra cost.
Step 3 - Download the App
Your ticket will include a reservation code. Once you download the Let's Roam app on your cell phone, you can enter the code to link your tickets to your profile.
On the app you'll select which city you'd like to do your hunt in. Some cities will even have more than one hunt available. From there, you'll be provided an address for your starting location.
Let the hunt begin!
Throughout the 2-hour hunt, each player receives messages with custom challenges. Sometimes it could be a photo challenge to take a picture of your group in a certain location. Or to answer a trivia question - most often the answers are relatively easy to find. Each challenge awards you with points (and there's bonus challenges available too!) but since we were focused more on exploring the locations, rather than competing against each other, we didn't keep tabs on who was winning.
TIP: The hunt covers quite a lot of distance. We easily walked more than 5km completing our hunt. So if you have younger ones or kids who just don't enjoy walking that much, you may want to bring along a stroller. You can also pause the game anytime you want to stop for a snack or do some extra exploring (or in my case, take more photos!)
With that in mind, I suggest giving yourself more than the recommended 2 hours. I imagine if we did this while on vacation to a city we've never been to before, we could have easily spent an entire day to complete it.
What the We Thought
After our day of exploring, we asked the kids what they thought of the scavenger hunt. They enjoyed it but by the end they were getting pretty tired. The trivia questions and challenges were easy enough to complete on their own but I think they would've enjoyed it more had there been a bit more challenge to it.
We also seemed to experience some technical issues with the app. A few times the app seemed to answer the questions before we had a chance to enter our answer. After walking for a solid 10-15 minutes to reach our next location it was a bit frustrating to find the question already completed.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed it! It was the perfect impetus for exploring downtown Ottawa with the kids. But we will probably enjoy it even more when the kids are a bit older (Wesley came close to wandering into oncoming traffic a few times). I could see this being a lot of fun when the kids are teenagers and we can actually race against each other (and I can legit kick their butts!)
I look forward to doing another hunt with them someday!
