The question every woman has been asking herself from the dawn of time! But have no fear! I'm about to dish out all my tips for outfitting you and your kids for your upcoming family photoshoot! Just follow these steps and you'll have everyone looking stylish before you know it!
2. Give them choices
Next up are the kids. Using your own outfit for inspiration, choose pieces from your children's wardrobe that coordinate and compliment your own. Notice I didn't say match. Again, we are looking for variety which can be found through incorporating solids with different colours, patterns and textures. Besides, trying to match will actually make your job harder. Pretty much the same goes for your partner.
4. Feel free to mix things up!
"Variety is the spice of life!" And same holds true for family photography. Mixing solids, patterns, colours and textures will give your photos more depth and a more natural look than perfectly coordinated pieces. Contrast a frilly dress on your daughter with a solid button-up for your son or husband. Mix a bold plaid with a subtle floral pattern. Add even more interest with layers and accessories. Consider layering a dress with a light cardigan or scarf. Hats are also really trendy and another way to play with shapes.
But don't forget, comfort and fit are also important - nothing can ruin a photoshoot quicker than a kid who's completely preoccupied because his clothes are too itchy/tight/warm etc.
5. A word on Outerwear
When picking out the right outfits we can often overlook outerwear. Be sure to consider the temperature outside and dress accordingly. It's really important little (and big) hands and noses stay warm. The last thing you want is a runny nose or hands tucked up inside of sweaters because it's not easy to photoshop a missing hand! If it's spring or fall you might be able to get away with slipping coats and hats on and off between photos to stay warm but a great ensemble includes coordinating footwear and coats - especially for Christmas and winter shoots.
